“When we complete tasks on autopilot our minds don't count them - this can lead to a feeling of helplessness, hopelessness and uselessness” - Natalie Blank
Sometimes you come across a small tome and find that after reading it, your life is changed. Sometimes that tome is very strange and as you start reading it you are unsure of what you are going to find. Sometimes you have to make yourself read past the odd parts. Many times it feels that it hasn't been worth the effort, sometimes though, it really is life changing.
"The Practically Magical Use of Lists: How To Consciously Create Your Own Reality (Life Transformation System A-Z Book 2)" by JoreJj Z. Elprehzleinn and Robyn Elprehzleinn is one such book. At least for me. It is part of a series which, for a reason that is lost to baby brain and new born exhaustion, I didn't realise until sometime after I had read this book and put the ideas enclosed into practice.
My daughter had silent reflux, which is basically where any time she was laid down, she got the equivalent of heart-burn. This made sleep for her a rather interesting proposition. Which meant sleep for me was beyond challenging - which in turn meant that having the energy or mental capacity for anything much was beyond me. I would get to the end of every day, having kept a very fussy baby alive but feeling like I had achieved nothing. I had also kept the house "kind of" running and most days I showered and had brushed my teeth (for me a must) but I was finding myself getting depressed and feeling like I wasn't getting anything done. Side-note - I was also working on a business I had started that was successful in that people used the service but not, in that I was running it for free(that is a whole other story).
Somehow "The practically Magical Use of Lists" came into my life. I read it while feeding my bub and started putting the ideas into practice. Suddenly I went from feeling useless and like I wasn't achieving anything to recognising that, not only was I doing a lot, but I was keeping a child alive. I went from feeling like I was on the verge of a breakdown down due to exhaustion and feeling like I was treading water about to drown but unable to do anything about it - to finding peace in what I was achieving, because I was suddenly able to see what I was achieving and knowing that I was contributing.
I have since read the other books in the series, and I use many of the exercises regularly to reframe and take control of my mental stories but Practical Magic is my favourite, perhaps because I read it first, perhaps because I feel like it saved me at a time when I really needed it.

I've also made a video where I describe a couple of the tools and how they helped me.
